This page explains what we collect when you read the archive, send a pitch, or join the weekly letter, and what you can ask us to do with it. We keep it plain because a policy nobody reads protects nobody.
When you write to us or subscribe, we store the name, email address and any message you send. Pitches may include attachments and links. Our hosting and analytics tools also record technical data such as browser type, device, approximate region and the pages you opened.
We use a small number of cookies to keep the site working and to understand which essays and columns get read. Analytics events are aggregated, not tied to your name. You can block or clear cookies in your browser at any time; the archive will still load.
Your details are used to reply to pitches, send the weekly letter you asked for, and keep records of contributor agreements. We do not sell reader lists. Where we rely on service providers for hosting, email delivery or analytics, they process data on our instructions and under their own safeguards.
Subscriber records stay until you unsubscribe. Pitch correspondence is kept for as long as we may need it for editorial planning, then cleared. Analytics data is retained in aggregate form and reviewed periodically so we are not holding more than we use.
You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, request a correction, ask us to delete it, or withdraw consent for the letter at any time. Readers in the EU and UK have these rights under the GDPR, and California readers under the CCPA, including the right to opt out of any sharing. Write to us and we will respond within a reasonable period.
